INDO-US TIES, WARMING IN RELATION:
USA is considered as the world’s oldest democracy where freedom and liberty of people is of supreme importance. No religion or race is preferred in Govt.’s policy. In today’s’ unipolar world it is the most powerful country- militarily, economically and politically.
On the other hand, India is world’s largest democracy, a budding economic power, a nation of learned people, most tolerant and liberal society. In India govt. does not favor any religion, race and color leaving the caste aside (in reservation perspective).
If we compare both countries by above parameters then we can easily conclude that India and USA could be natural allies. Politically speaking, if they become strategic partners then this becomes more important for these two countries and also for world order.
By playing the decisive role in world war second, USA arrived at international political scene with a bang. In the last six decades, USA appeared too many acting like a globe cop. But the one who dares to restrain the ugly, dangerous and rogue can easily earn this kind of tag. Had USA been a great power in thirties, no Adolph would have become a Hitler and no Benito a Mussolini (Hitler and Mussolini are symbols of Evil, world over). Who can dare to reign in Mullah Omar or Osama Bin Laden? Certainly not India alone! If the President of Iran Mr. Ahmedinizad is boasting to wipe the State of Israel from the world map forcefully is right, then how come what the Osama Bin Laden says is wrong? Isn’t an honorable President of a great Country like Iran and world’s most wanted terrorist speaking in coherence? If USA wants to restrain Iran from making nuclear weapons and become a stockpile of nuclear weapons in most volatile West Asian region, then nothing is wrong in it.
In the last couple of year’s India and USA have come closer on many issues which have ignited the natural USA bashers, some of them are from India also. Many will oppose the powerful due to no reason; same is the fate of India in south Asia. Many small countries remain upset forever due to no reasons, though India has always supported its small neighbors in every thick or thin. In many cases, USA also has committed some political mistakes due to any reasons but may not be due to bad intentions. Some attribute these mistakes to arrogance of power. It’s true that responsibility should accompany the power where ever it goes but arrogance is a cousin of power. The great/mighty countries like USA has the greater responsibilities too, that of protecting the poor and weak nations from powerful and rogue ones. While doing so USA has to act cautiously and not be trigger happy and not give any chance to evil get any public sympathy.
While on course of friendship India and USA are on the verge of entering into Civil Nuclear Energy deal which should auger well for both the countries if implemented in letter and spirit. Opposition to this agreement was too natural. Leading the contingent of nuclear deal opposition in India are learned Mr. Brahma Chellany, Mr. Bhrat Karnard, Prof. Sateesh Sharma and brilliant writer Ms. Seema Mustafa. Some times they cite very funny reasons to oppose the nuclear deal, i.e. Pakistan is in win-win situation at this deal, Indian strategic nuclear program will go into hands of US and US will entrap India in FMCT/NPT etc. If the Indian Govt. comes with clarifications on the issues raised by them then the next day they come up with new objections.
While opposing the friendship of India and USA, many critics seem to be suffering from US hysteria. India is enough strong country which cannot be shepherded by any country. If India is opposing Iran for nuclear controversy at IAEA or any other forum it is solely at its own will and interests and not under any US dictate. There can be many issues where India and USA have common interests and they can agree on that. India cannot act in a mindset of opposing whatsoever USA supports and vice-versa. While opposing Iran’s nuclear weapon program, the Indian PM had stated that India can’t afford to have one more Nuclear weapon state in its neighborhood; he was very true in his statement. India had remained very friendly to Iran every then and now. Every body knows that even after this, Iran has supported Pakistan with arms and ammunition in the wars which Pakistan fought with India. Who knows about future if it does it again and this time with nuclear weapons? In also tackling the Nepal fiasco, Indian government was criticized by such able thinkers of playing in hands of USA. India has its own interests in Nepal which it should cater to. If any public opinion in any country is not in interest of India then Indian government cannot go with it citing it as a will of public. Indian security is supreme than any public opinion. If today, Maoists control the Govt. in Nepal and do not renounce the terrorist activities then certainly India cannot go with that. India can never afford to have Chinese puppets in Nepal. Today, Maoist violence is a major threat to India as a state than any other form of terrorism. If USA also opposes Maoists controlling the Government in Nepal then how India is adhering to USA dictate over this issue.
By keeping the Indian interests as foremost, India has to support USA at International levels and get USA support in return for it to reach the greater heights of International relations. Whether USA wants to help India to contain China or it actually wants to befriend India, any reason is good for India as long as it is in interest of India. There is no ambiguity of any kind in understanding that how much China wants to see India emerge as major world power.
It is high time to shun USA bashing and India should become a strategic partner of USA not for global policing but to strive for establishment of democracy and free will of people across the globe and its own development.
